- 68% of employees say their boss never, or at best, occasionally, encourages them to take risks. And yet, risk-taking is consistently rated as one of the most critical leadership behaviors. In sudden change, risk-taking is required to move forward because so much is unknown. So as a leader, how can you encourage smart risk-taking? Well, number one, get clear on the rules of risk-taking. If you've been to a casino and seen a craps table, you know it's intimidating because the rules of the game aren't obvious. You'll see people standing around, watching other people roll the dice, all having a good time, but not taking the risk with their own money and stepping up to roll the dice themselves. Same thing happens back at the office. If employees don't understand the rules of risk-taking, they won't step up and take risks, either. So clarify the rules for them.
