- A critical component for helping your new manager get off to a successful start is to help them transform and foster relationships with their direct reports early and authentically. Just because someone now has the title of manager doesn't inherently make them smarter or more knowledgeable than their team members. When I first became a manager at Google, I was 24 years old, all of a sudden leading a handful of people who were previously my peers. They were all older than me and had been at the company longer than me. This was awkward to say the least. Your new manager might have similar feelings as they transition with their team.
