- Strategies that do not get acted upon are not worth even the paper they were written on. Competitive advantage, or lack thereof, depends not on what you, even if you are the CEO, want to do, but what all of the people who make up the company actually do. In order to increase the odds that your strategies will be robust and that they will lead to real action, I propose the following guidelines. Each year, put together two teams, say a red team and a blue team. The idea behind creating two teams is to reduce the likelihood of group think, to foster competition, to generate a greater variety of options. Each team should include people who control critical resources, those who have key information, and those who will play a key role in implementation. It's entirely okay if these criteria mean that each team should include some people who are not yet part of the top leadership of the company.
