Gain commitment over compliance

- There is a critical question that frames this whole course and frames how you will manage for results, and here it is. Do you want compliance or commitment? Well, let's compare the two, shall we? Compliance is I have to. Commitment is I want to. Compliance is force. Commitment is choice. Compliance is passive, and commitment is active. Compliance is get it done. Commitment is get it right. At the end of the day, compliance is all about the paycheck, but commitment is all about purpose. So which of these do you want? Chances are you're like me, and you'd pick commitment every time, and so if you are with me and you want to build more commitment with your team so you can manage for even better results, here's what you must do. First, you must believe it's possible. You must believe that people actually want to and could and might be committed to their work, that they do think of it as something they want to have meaning in and not just draw a paycheck. If you don't believe it's possible, you'll never get there, and you must be committed yourself. After all, if your team doesn't see your commitment, what's the likelihood that they will be? You must relinquish power. Compliance is all about control. It's about your personal opportunity to say go do this. It's all about positional power. You must relinquish some of that. You must let go of some of your power and control in order to gain commitment, which means that you must accept more ambiguity. It may not go exactly the way you envisioned it as you bring people along and they have their ideas and their approaches. We've got a clear vision of the result, but they may want to come at it a different way. You must accept more ambiguity. You must work harder. Trust me, it will take more from you to bring people to a place of commitment than to simply tell them what to do, and you must be more self-aware. If you want to manage for results with a committed team, you are in the position of influencing and not telling, which means that everything you do has an impact on how people will choose to be committed. You must be more self-aware, and lastly, you must be a learner. Chances are you're already that, or you wouldn't be with me, but here's the point. Doing it this way, making this conscious choice, will require more of you, more of your skills. So you'll need to be a learner to be successful. Managing for commitment is an investment, and this course will help you get there. Now, if all you really want is compliance, this course is going to challenge you, and every video will ask you to reconsider that decision.
