- What motivates you at work? Can you think of a time when a coworker did something that energized you? When you think about genuine motivation, especially in the knowledge economy, goodwill is essential. What exactly is goodwill? Goodwill is kind of a people-based credit. When you have goodwill, you have credit with the other person. So when you encounter challenges and complexity, the other person responds with, "Let's do this," because you have deposited into the relationship. You aren't overdrawn. Goodwill is a form of relational capital. More than two-thirds of employees say that they are made happy by goodwill gestures from their colleagues, and a further 84% state that they return the favor. So what does goodwill look like at work?
