- When you're building a truly resilient team, make sure you always give your teammates respect as a gift and not as a grade. I had a person do this for me once when I first started in the San Diego Fire Department, a captain named Joe, and he was kind of known as a crusty guy on the job, like, the word on the street was that he didn't really believe in women on the job. And so after going through the academy for four months, my first day on the job, I was assigned to work with Joe. And we're in the kitchen in the morning, we're drinking coffee, and Joe puts his cup down and he says, "Hey guys, let's go out and do a drill." Now, when you're a probie, which was me at the time, you're on probation for your first year as a firefighter, you can get fired at any moment. So every time someone wants to do a drill, it's usually kind of a game of watch the moron, which is watched the probie. So I'm in panic instantly. We go out…
