- Having your people do a self-appraisal, at the very least, guarantees that they reflect on their year, and you will also make sure you get their take on how they did. The performance appraisal is not a one-way conversation. My highest hope for you, sincerely as the manager, is that you get the joy and satisfaction of helping people unlock, setting and achieving goals they didn't think possible. Getting their perspective as written by them is absolutely crucial to this process. It's their career, after all. Now your company may have different processes on these. If they have a self-appraisal form they'd like you to use, use that. If they don't, ask your employees to do a self-appraisal anyway. Make sure you give them a heads up when you let them know the process, "Hey, we're going to do self-appraisals this year."
