- Think about the people you're friends with at work, that you chat with at work social events, and that you're connected with professionally. Do you notice any themes in who you've built these relationships with? They probably look a lot like you, are around your age, and have similar interests to you. It's no wonder that when you refer people to your company, you start with your network. This network hiring ultimately creates a more homogenous environment. You can diversify your network in and out of work by making conscious changes to how you interact at events and the types of events you plan. To start, make an effort to make small talk and be more social with people that are outside of your regular circle and that are different from you.
