- And now we come to this awkward moment, the rating, or the compensation, or both. The keys to having these discussions virtually are: slow down, share context, be explicit, and most importantly, plan. Okay, so slowing down. When your conversation is through video, you lose a lot of what researchers call cues. That's all the extra information about how someone is feeling we pick up when we're in person: subtle movements, breathing, eye twitches. So trying to read people through the screen literally takes longer. So resist the temptation to speed it up and get it over with. I guarantee you something will be lost in translation. Now context, because of the lack of visibility, you really have to show your work when you're talking about their score or comp.
