- So you're going to ask for a pay rise, but the question is, how much should you ask for? Well, the first rule is get the other person to open first. So ideally you would just say, "I would like a raise, what can you do?" rather than "I want X". Why are we doing this? Well, because they might give you more than you were expecting. You might get good news. So if you can get your boss to open first, that's great. Then, regardless of whether your boss has actually offered you some pathetically small increase or maybe they've offered you a really big increase or maybe they've not given you a number at all, they've said, "Well, how much do you want?" Whatever they've said, you will then have to open. By the way, I would try a couple of times to avoid opening. So if they say, "Well, I don't know, I might be able to give you a rise. How much do you want?" You should say, "Well, I don't know really. What do you think would be…
