- Let's get something straight. Autonomy is not reserved only for certain kinds of jobs. All jobs in all workplaces have the potential to be autonomous and all individuals working hard deserve the benefits of autonomy, yet the reality is is that some jobs are inherently less autonomous than others. So there's a challenge in how do we infuse greater autonomy into these otherwise low autonomy jobs? For guidance, let's go to a really famous study done about two decades ago of hospital janitors. It yields some really important lessons for all of us. So hospital janitors, not a job that pays a lot, not a job where you hold in enough esteem, not a job that's especially autonomous, you're sweeping floors, you're cleaning rooms. But in this study, the managers in the hospital were told to tell the janitors craft the job in a way that is meaningful to you.
