- One of the best things you can do to promote autonomy in your workplace is to carve out an island of autonomy for your team. Let me tell you what I mean by that. A great example comes from Atlassian, the Australian software company. They do something super cool. Once a quarter on Thursday afternoons, they say to their software developers, for the next 24 hours, go work on anything you want, do whatever you want the way you want with whomever you want, pure autonomy. The only thing we ask is that you show what you've created to the rest of the company on Friday afternoon. They call these things a Ship It Day. A Ship It Day. One day of intense, undiluted autonomy, and lo and behold, these Ship It Days have led to ideas for new products, improvements to existing products.
