How to promote autonomy: An autonomy audit

- Autonomy is one of the keys to high performance in the workplace. We know that when people have some sovereignty over what they do, how they do it, when they do it, who they do it with, they enjoy their jobs more, they engage more deeply, they perform at a much higher level. The trouble is, is that we often don't have a good read on how much autonomy people actually have on the job. So I developed something that I call an autonomy audit, a very simple four-part questionnaire that can give you a gauge about autonomy in your workplace. It's really simple. It's four questions. Have your team answer each of these questions on a one to 10 scale. Here are the four questions. How much autonomy do you have over your tasks at work? That is, your main responsibilities and what you do in a given day. Rate it at one to 10. Now, how much autonomy do you have over your time at work? That is, when you show up, when you leave, and…
