How to promote mastery: Progress rituals

- The work of Teresa Amabile at Harvard Business School has shown us that the single biggest day-to-day motivator on the job is this, making progress in meaningful work. Amabile that has shown that with the days that people make progress are the days they're committed, the days they feel good about what they're doing, the days that they actually bring their best self to work. The trouble is, and it's a big problem, is that in order to make progress, you need information on how you're doing. You need feedback, and most organizations are feedback deserts. So what do you do? I think there's a relatively simple solution, which is this, give yourself the feedback. If you're not going to get the feedback from external sources, deliver it to yourself, and the best way to do that is with what I like to call a progress ritual.
