- Here's what we know about feedback. The best feedback is frequent and informal. Here's what we know about performance reviews. They are infrequent and formal. They happen once a year, annual performance reviews, and they're often awkward, Kabuki theater style conversations with one's boss. We're doing it exactly wrong. This is one reason why traditional performance reviews don't do a very good job of promoting mastery. So what can we do to create feedback systems that do promote mastery? This ends up being a pretty hard problem to solve, but a solution is out there. It's one being fashioned by many organizations I've seen. I like to call this technique weekly one-on-ones with a twist. Here's how it works. Suppose that I were your boss.
