- Here's the key to understanding purpose as a motivator. Purpose isn't one thing, it's two things. There's what I call capital P Purpose. That's making a difference in the world, solving the climate crisis, feeding the hungry. Hugely important. But there's another kind of purpose that we often overlook. That's what I call small p purpose, which is are you simply making a contribution? both matter and it's important to understand the difference. I can explain the difference by telling you about two really interesting studies. The first study was done at the University of Michigan. There were students working in a call center, work study students who were calling University of Michigan alumni to raise money for the school. It turned out that when students spent just five minutes reading a letter from people who are on the receiving end of the money that they were raising, or even better, meeting the beneficiaries of the money…
