How success is measured

- I teach a strategy course in the technology management program at UC Santa Barbara. And one of the activities I have the students do is a business simulation. The first step is to establish a five-year plan identifying their strategy for success. And often one of their biggest struggles is identifying measurable goals. One student for example, had a marketing goal to set reasonable prices for products and performance and size markets. Sure, this makes sense on the surface. Of course, you should set reasonable goals. But how would you know if you'd succeeded? How would you measure this? It makes sense that a bunch of college kids in their first strategy class don't necessarily have this down yet. But I find this just as often when I'm working with established clients. Most major companies have this down at the corporate level. But even with major corporations, this idea of measurable goals can get lost as you move…
