- At some point, you may have heard about target markets. If so, you probably heard about it in terms of some sort of demographic grouping. For example, women age 30 to 35 with a college degree living in the Midwest, or millennial men who like sports. Thinking about a target market might not be as helpful as thinking about your ideal customer. So here's the premise of the ideal customer concept. Somewhere out there there's a single person who is best suited for your product or service. When you're designing that product or service, the more you can have this person in mind, and the more you know about them in the first place, the more specific your offer will be. So if you're selling a course on mechanical engineering tests, who might that customer be? Let's say he's an engineering student at the University of Michigan.
