- I used to work with a colleague who would say "When it comes to discipline, use the lightest touch that will make the most impact." Heavy-handedness might get your point across, but it might also crush people in the process. Wherever possible, you want to match the feedback you give to the tone and seriousness of the situation, and that also means deciding whether the feedback should be formal or informal. In this lesson, I'll help you understand the distinctions between formal and informal types of feedback, and when to use them. For formal feedback, follow legal protocols, especially for things like annual or quarterly reviews, HR interviews, or other fully documented meetings. Each employee should also be given evaluation criteria up front, as well as the specifics of the evaluation process and timeline.
