- Interviewing is the foundation of the entire recruiting process and can make or break your ability to successfully place the best talent. Throughout your interview, it's critical to address what is most important to each candidate you interview. First, you need to develop a rapport and trust. During your initial interview, candidates are guarded because you're a stranger they don't know or trust. To improve rapport and trust, share your track record of helping others with similar experience to advance their career. Explain, "I take my direction from you", encouraging them to give you directives which will reveal what's most important to them. Always conduct a general interview without a specific job in mind so you don't slant your questions toward the specifications of a job.
