- In their book, "First, Break All the Rules," Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman recommend that managers develop routine employee conversations. They tell us managers who use general rules of thumb when communicating with their employees create consistency. This fosters a feeling of security because workers know what to expect from their boss. This is particularly good advice for new managers. By definition, a lot of what's happening to you is well, new. You may not know how to respond to some situations and can easily find yourself in a loss for words. That's where a mental script can come in handy. With some preparation, you help your brain create shortcuts to reduce the mental work in a situation.
