- Before you start making up stories about what your rejection means and jumping to conclusions, make sure you've got your facts straight. It's time to play detective. Here are a few key points to consider when you are fact-finding why you were rejected. Start by retracing your steps. Are there any clues where you may have gone wrong or misunderstood a sign or a signal? Any miscommunications? Start back at the very beginning. Reread the initial instructions or overtures. I once worked with an arts organization that was very disappointed to not receive a grant only to discover that the reason they didn't get it is because they weren't in the right geographical location. They were never qualified to receive this grant to begin with, but somehow that little bit of information had gotten skipped over.
