- [Instructor] I started teaching when I was 24. On my first night of class, I was nervous. I was finally getting to do the thing I had spent years preparing for. I stood before my class of adults and introduced myself. I was doing everything I could not to show how scared I was. A guy in the class raised his hand. I called on him and he very bluntly said that I was not his teacher, and none of the class would ever take me seriously. He said, I looked 16 and that their old teacher was someone they could really trust. Their old teacher left under shady circumstances, but sharing that wouldn't make me seem more qualified. I took a deep breath and replied to the guy that I could understand where he was coming from. I said, change is hard but I had been hired to teach them important information.
