Leadership accountability: Be consistent
- As I was preparing for this course, I asked a number of people what it meant for a leader to be consistent. Here are the most common responses. "They do what they say they're going to do." "Who I see today is the same person I see tomorrow." "They are steady and reliable." "They communicate expectations and they manage them." And, "They do the right thing over and over again." So ask yourself, would your direct reports say these things about you? Well, I can't tell you how many times I consult with organizations to identify their leadership gaps. And at the top of the list of employee issues is lack of trust and lack of consistency of their leader. Consistency matters. Why? Because when people know what to expect from you and how you'll respond, it enhances engagements, it increases satisfaction and improves decision-making, all of which leads to greater productivity.
