- Yes, there are different types of metrics. And yes, there are times when you should and shouldn't have different types of metrics. Also, there are different ways to classify metrics. So where do you start? One good way to classify metrics is to think in terms of a process. What goes into a process? What happens during processing? What comes out at the end of the process? And what impact it has on the intended audience or customers? In other words, input metrics, process metrics, output metrics, and outcome metrics. Input metrics measure the inputs that go into a process, making of a product, or performance of a service. For example, percent defect rate of raw materials, percent on-time delivery of supplies, quality of incoming students, experienced level of new hires, number of field technicians deployed during a power outage, and number of checkout lines open in the store.
