- One of the most effective networking hacks is to find things going on during industry events that are off the grid, underground, unofficial or offsite. I call them sideshows. The biggest, most obvious sideshow, of course, is simply hanging out in the lobby bar. I call it lobby-con. Don't kid yourself. It's where the best networking gets done. It works because it's up close and personal. It's full of human connection. It's not passively listening to a speaker on a stage. It's getting to know people over a drink. It allows you to keep your eyes and ears open for great conversations that might tip you off to cool parties where you'll meet even more people in your industry. Always keep an ear out for the party that's happening elsewhere in the venue, or a dinner get together that's happening in a nearby restaurant, or any number of satellite gatherings, onsite or off, where you can slide into it.
