- One of my more memorable consulting experiences happened in 2009. I was working with a large organization's Chief Information Officer, or just CIO. We were discussing the management report that their finance team put together each month. Now, to me the report looked great with all sorts of pretty charts and numbers. But the CIO didn't agree with me. She waved the report in front of me and said, "You know what I do with this each month?" She then placed the 30-page glossy report into the paper shredder. It was like watching a horror movie as these poor old pie charts met their demise. Now, I instinctively felt sorry for the finance team. I mean, all that hard work for nothing? The CIO told me that the report provided absolutely no insights on the business. The finance team had no idea that she was doing this. I mean, talk about a break down in communication.
