Managing complementors

- Intel and Microsoft provide an excellent example of what I mean by complementors. Neither is a supplier to or buyer from the other company, yet Intel's microprocessor and Microsoft's operating system are two of the most important hardware and software components in a PC. The PC cannot operate without either. Importantly too, the microprocessor and the operating system must work together effectively in a complimentary manner. Complementors are strategically important for several reasons. First, they're your allies. Both you and your complementors have a stake in increasing customer value and expanding the number of customers. In order to thrive, airplane manufacturers need a growing number of air travelers and healthy airlines. So do airports. This interdependence creates incentives for complementors to collaborate.
