Managing expectations for virtual project teams

- Communication is the key to working effectively with virtual teams. You'll need to communicate more than usual about what the project is and expectations right from the start. So let's start with the project kickoff. Being together for a kickoff meeting to establish an initial connection and determine how you'll work together is preferable, but on a remote project, you can't be together in person to establish that connection and determine how you'll work together. So you have to approach your project kickoff differently. I recommend making all the reading about the project available to the team members before the kickoff meeting. Use a shared platform like Teams or Google Drive or any of the other options out there. Ask the team to read the charter, vision statement, business case, or any other research you have.
