Managing the two-role transition
- In Roman mythology, the god, Janus, has two faces. He is the god of transitions and new beginnings, so he must simultaneously look at the future and the past. While you're transitioning to a new manager role, you may wish you could look two ways at once. You're likely learning your new position while still doing your old job, which requires a lot of vision and flexibility. Sometimes you have warning about a new position. Other times it happens really quickly. Taking a little time to coordinate and plan the transition will make it a lot easier. Here's how. First, get clear on your current role. Document what you do in your current job. Review your calendar for meetings and projects. Take time to write down what you do every day for a week, and make sure the key tasks are noted.
