- The inspirational leader manages upwards assertively. So if your boss makes it hard for you to be a great manager or a great leader, then you must fight upwards. And that takes a bit of courage, but it's important. So for example, if you're going to be a great communicator, you have to get the information to communicate and then you have to get permission to communicate it. And if your boss doesn't really want you to be a great communicator, you may have to fight with your boss a bit in order to do that. And similarly, if you want to empower your people then you need to get permission from your boss. You need to get them to empower you or certainly, get permission from your boss to empower your people.
