- The inspirational leader manages upwards assertively. So if your boss makes it hard for you to be a great manager or a great leader, then you must fight upwards. And that takes a bit of courage, but it's important. So for example, if you're going to be a great communicator, you have to get the information to communicate and then you have to get permission to communicate it. And if your boss doesn't really want you to be a great communicator, you may have to fight with your boss a bit in order to do that.
