As a math educator, you need to not only think about what your student needs to be able to do leaving your classroom but also holistically about that student. What does that student need to master from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade? One way to do this is to be domain specific as you teach your students. I can access the domains by scrolling down from the Mathematics home page of the Common Core standards website. Here I can also see the standards listed by domain. So for example, if I'm starting a geometry unit, I should be able to click on the Geometry button, click on the standards on this domain, and here I can see everything from kindergarten all the way down through high school in terms of what students should be able to master. When I'm lesson planning, this is a valuable tool. I can go into the specific domain, figure out exactly what I'm going to teach, and then take a look at what my students need to have as prerequisite knowledge before my lesson. If I have…
