You need to create an on the record buy in from leadership to the bigger vision before you can launch into the "how" of the vision is going to happen. Identify ways to get leadership to commit.
- When I say negotiating the goal, I mean we need to involve other people in the process. We don't exist in a vacuum, most likely you're going to need to get buy-in from other people in order to execute on your strategies. And so what I want you to do is collaboratively create these goals with the people around you, because when they are bought in, they're more likely to be committed to the goal, just like you are. So here's an example. Let's say you want to conduct a series of trainings for your organization as it relates to diversity and inclusion. Now, instead of just rolling those out on your own, what you want to do is talk to the other leaders within the company and figure out how they see the problem and what solutions they suggest. And then after the conversation you're going to recognize that your goal has changed slightly, but oftentimes it's better because you've gotten input from other people in the company, and that's a great example of how you can negotiate the goal before you start to execute.
