- If you're looking for a job, chances are your first place to look, isn't the local newspaper. You're probably scouring LinkedIn or looking for jobs online at job boards, like the Ladders or indeed.com. This makes online jobs data very important for gauging the health of the labor market. Online job postings go down when there aren't any jobs to fill and the economy is weak. And postings go up, when there are more jobs than applicants and the labor market is strong. This data is compiled and it's something called the Help Wanted Online Index. And it reflects changes over time in job openings that are advertised online in the United States. The data series aggregates the total number of ads available by month in real time, from over 50,000 online job domains including traditional job boards corporate boards, social media sites and smaller job sites that serve niche markets and smaller geographic areas.
