- Have you heard of the leadership theory, Leader-Member Exchange, or LMX? It describes how leaders have closer relationships with some subordinates than others. Those in the in-group communicate with the leader more often. Consequently, they get extra information and opportunities on the job. When the leader has a new project or a complicated customer issue to figure out, it just makes sense to go to the in-group where communication is more natural and easier. But people who are not close to the leader fall into the out-group. Folks in this group are often overlooked for new assignments, and out of the loop on information. Research tells us there's a lot of potential value in the out-group, like unique and creative perspectives the manager hasn't considered before. But being in the out-group isn't very satisfying. These people see their manager having favorites, and that's discouraging. They become less engaged.…
