- The third stage of the pivot method is Pilot. This is about identifying small experiments that you can work with your new manager to set up, as they build rapport with their team and grow their leadership skills. Pilots and small experiments create a sense of psychological safety by testing new projects before going all in. One common pilot, even before someone has official direct reports, is leading a project where their distributed team members are reporting into them in dotted-line reporting. Another pilot might be having a team lead managing day-to-day operations to start, while you and that newly-minted people manager share responsibility for something like performance reviews.
