- As leaders, it's important that we assess people as accurately as possible, but we're not always correct in our assessments of others and this can influence decisions we make at every level of the organization. Using the What If curiosity exercise allows you to identify, challenge and bust assumptions that you make about other people without the emotional patina of judgment or criticism so that you can see options that might otherwise be missed and increase the accuracy of your assessments. Let me share a scenario and then show you how to use the What If exercise. A company I worked with had just completed their new building and they had conducted what they considered to be a thorough security analysis. The senior director, Lewis, presented the new facial recognition technology selected to give employees access to the new building with their faces. But manager Yoli challenged the decision to use this technology. Lewis was annoyed and assumed that Yoli was just a troublemaker. Okay…
