Practice: Find meaning at work

- This practice is to help you become more aware of what you find meaningful so you can be more inspired every day. Find a quiet space and shut off any distractions. Sit comfortably, relaxing your shoulders, your feet on the floor. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Start to become aware of the sensation of your breath as it goes in. Now, deepen your breath. Breathing in, two, three, four, out, two, three, four. In, two, three, four, out, two, three, four. In two, three, four, out, two, three, four. As you feel yourself relaxing, bring to mind a time when you felt joy at work, not because of a major accomplishment. It was a simple joy of being engaged in an activity that absorbed you fully. Some people find joy in being creative, others find joy in bringing people together, still, others find joy in confronting and overcoming challenges or in mentoring others or just in creating deep and trusted relationships. As you connect with that memory, try to feel it with all of your senses. What were the sights, the sounds, the feelings? Were you with others? Notice what your impact was on them. Who were you being in that moment? What strengths were you expressing? As you feel into that memory, notice if you feel that joy in a certain part of your body. I often feel it around my heart as a feeling of openness and expansion or a sense of deep gratitude. Just take a few minutes to savor the sensations. You can pause this video here and take as much time as you like. Now that you're done exploring what feels meaningful for you, download the exercise file and jot down the answers to the list of questions. Sometimes we're able to get insights by ourselves, other times we can try this exercise with a trusted friend. I leave you with a favorite quote from Howard Thurman that I shared in my book, "Wired for Authenticity". "Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive". Until the next time my friends.
