- I once worked at an upstart secondary school in Denver that grew from 150 students in year two to over 900 when I left in year six. Each year, our faculty doubled. Like any rapidly growing startup, school leaders worked hard to over-communicate culture norms and establish rituals that anchored faculty to our school's unique approach. One of these rituals was that each fall before the semester, the whole faculty and staff team would attend the three day offsite retreat. We played together, we broke bread together, and we planned together. A staple of each retreat was when the head would share the school's origin story. It didn't matter how many times you had heard it before. The story was compelling. It placed the current school year into a bigger context.
