- Billing means you need to plan ahead because you really want to be sure that when you're launching your business, you keep that cash flow going. And if you get billing wrong, cashflow can plummet, and that's the lifeblood of any business. If you have a client who will need a wide range of services throughout the year, then you might want to break that billing down into a monthly retainer, with a periodic catch-up billing for any items that go beyond that number. A lot of creatives do deliverables based billing, and that's great, but don't wait until the project is over to invoice, or what's worse, 30 days after the project is over to invoice. So now you've delayed your cashflow by another 30 days. The larger the project, the more risk of not receiving that money in a timely fashion, so you'll want to invoice a deposit upfront and some progress payments along the way.
