- Sometimes inexperienced managers and leaders use assumptions and hopes to guide their thinking. They assume someone is going to complete something on time. They hope that the work will get done properly. They assume they know the motives of why people do what they do, and they hope things won't turn out as bad as they think they will. Guessing is problematic because it introduces our own biases into the choices we make. I once coached a group of family members who work together. Each person made judgments about what the other family members were doing based on past experiences they'd had as children. Productive leaders, on the other hand, focus primarily on actions and results. They deal with practical, factual information that they can see and measure.
