- We can group just about every side hustle idea into three categories or buckets: Products, services, and everything else. So these categories are similar in the world of startups, or in a traditional mom and pop business like a coffee shop or dry cleaning place. But for our purposes, we're focusing on side hustles, a project you typically operate by yourself and without quitting your day job. Let's take a closer look at these three categories. If something is a product, someone can buy it and walk away. It could be something physical, a t-shirt, a book, or it could be something digital like an app, software, or anything else you download. I recently did a story on a guy who came up with caffeinated chewing gum as an alternative to energy drinks. That's a product. Now if something is a service, you usually have to do something for it.
