Provide consistent accountability
- Accountability is essential to productive leadership, yet it's often misunderstood. Sometimes people say, "I'm going to make myself accountable." That's personal responsibility, which is important. But my preferred definition of accountability is not something that we can do for ourselves, because accountability requires the follow-up of someone else. As the leader, it's your job to provide that accountability. You're going to follow up with the people you lead. Adopt an unwavering commitment to consistent follow-up. This means you follow up for both positive and negative results. You want those you lead to feel that you're always going to be there, not because you're expecting them to fail, but because you want to coach them to perform at their very best. We all do better when we have great coaching. As you follow up with people, come from a place of service and helping the person get what they want. For example…
