Recognize high-conflict behaviors
- While it's important to stop labeling others, it's practical to learn how to identify and label their behaviors. The distinction is the ability to separate the person from their behaviors. In other words, a person may have a pattern of arguing, but you don't call them a hothead. The observable behavior is arguing. You can coach someone on how to stop arguing, but you can't coach someone not to be a hothead. If you don't know how to recognize and deal with dysfunctional patterns, it's easy to get pulled into unnecessary conflict. Although there are dozens of behaviors, let's identify the five common behaviors that can cause problems for you and your team if they go unchecked. I think of these five patterns as the ABCs of high-conflict behaviors. Behaviors that contribute to conflict and dysfunction in relationships. A stands for argumentative.
