- Okay, so let's talk about referrals for a second. A referral is simply the act of putting in a good word or mentioning something to someone. We've all been through a referral before. Haven't you ever referred your friend to a great place to eat? Or haven't you ever referred your friend to a new place to shop at? It's as simple as that. I myself have received a referral before, but in this case, it was for an internship. An advisor of mine, who I've known for some time, knows a lawyer, and he was able to refer me to this lawyer and put in a good word and connect the both of us. And through this connection, I was able to speak with this lawyer and also land an internship at the law firm that he works at. Professionals love to give referrals because they know that if they refer someone, they are four times more likely to land the internship or to land the job.
