- Sales burnout is something we hear about a lot. So before we look at overcoming and preventing it, what exactly is it? Sales burnout is a state of mental, emotional and sometimes physical distress that's caused by prolonged or repeated exposure to stressors, such as repeated failure, like having an overly hard to achieve target or high-pressure sales situations, like difficult customers, internal pressures, and so on. Often being overworked and unappreciated can bring it on. But even when we're appreciated, simply overworking can trigger it. And burnout goes beyond simply being tired. You don't get it after a long day or just 'cause you haven't had your morning coffee. It's the prolonged stress exposure that puts you into the state of distress.
