- Amazon was one of the world's pioneers in online retailing. Not withstanding the company's first mover advantage, founder and CEO Jeff Bezos knew that ecommerce would rapidly become a revolution and attract a hoard of other players. Also, most, if not all, elements of ecommerce are easy to imitate. Thus, Bezos and his team needed to figure out how to convert the company's pioneering moves into durable competitive advantage. 20 years later, it is clear that they have succeeded mightily. My analysis of the company's history indicates that Bezos and his team pursued a multipronged strategy in order to build durable competitive advantage for Amazon.
