If you are unexpectedly telecommuting, suddenly you may have no real reason to leave the house. The line between work and home has been bulldozed without your consent. You might even have no real reason to get up off your couch. But a commute, even when you hate, is an important psychological signal. It gives you a change of scenery, and a sense of transition between home and work and back again. The same cannot be said for just walking past your dog on the way to your dining room table.
