- In my work coaching new engineering managers, one of the biggest challenges I see is getting former techies comfortable with letting go of the keyboard. As a manager, you have the potential to have a much bigger impact on your products and your projects than you would as a single contributor. But this often comes at the cost of having to step back from working on development or design as part of your daily tasks. As a manager, you're going to be keeping track of your team and your progress towards shared goals. You likely won't be able to scale your attention to cover all of your management tasks and intensive hands-on technical work, and even if you are able to continue to code or design daily, you probably won't be able to do as much work as the full output of your team.
