- It's important to stay connected through formal and informal career check-ins throughout your new manager's tenure, but particularly in the beginning. In a LinkedIn study, 72% of respondents listed one-on-one time with their direct manager as the most important part of any pre-boarding or onboarding process. I recommend having career conversations at least twice a year outside of when you typically do performance reviews. That way there's no pressure. Your new manager isn't sitting in front of you nervous, wondering about their bonus or their performance. They're in an open-minded and curious state where they can more readily and transparently discuss their challenges as a new manager and how those development areas relate to their broader career goals and vision for the future.
